Passion fruit is round to oval and either yellow or dark purple at maturity. In place like Madeira Island there are as many as 10 varieties. the fruit has a distinct very sweet flavor that often is juiced and used to flavor soft drinks as well as liqueurs.

It is popular all over South America, Portugal, Hawaii, and Asia. Some of the names for it are Lilikoi (Hawaiian), Maracaju (Portuguese), and Passion Fruit in English.
